about

Part I - Descent

Crisp fall days give way to howling winds over dying landscapes. A simple piano melody plays, highlighting how barren life can feel before the onset of a vengeful winter. The pace picks up as the cold sets in, and there is no doubt that winter is upon us.

Part II - Storms

Marching in with almost military intent, a staccato viola fells the piano, and the winds pick up as the bass plays a swirling tornado-like pattern. The chilling rains begin with a single vicious guitar chord. A thumping kick drum signals that it’s cold enough to snow, and snow it does … aggressively … again and again. Just as it starts to feel as though things are calming down, the marching begins again, and the harshest storm of the year sets in, ripping through the streets, knocking out power with icy fury, and blanketing everything once again with foot after foot of the dreaded white stuff. A pleading chorus of “Will this ever end?” is rebuffed as the storm gets more and more intense, building and building and building to a frenzied peak, and seemingly out of nowhere, the dark skies suddenly part as the season’s swan song passes.

Part III - Lifting

Audible pain lingers from winter’s fierce beating, but layered over it is the sound of hope in the form of soothing strings. Blue skies and innocent clouds insist that spring is not far. People emerge from their winter caves, flowers peek up through the earth, and there is a relaxing sense that everyone has survived one more winter. The cycle of life continues its dance as we look forward to another peaceful summer.
